Overall REflection
Going into this project was initially exciting, as what seemed to be a solid group of friends came together with a common vision: to promote positive self esteem at our school and to openly discuss stigmatized subject matter in school. It was not merely surprising to our group, but mostly disappointing that our group fell apart, that we were not able to set our differences apart, and not only did our connection as friends crumble, so did the direction of our project. Several of our key group members quit without a willingness to discuss the problems that arose.
Nonetheless, we tried to pick up from the interruption in our progress and attempted to recruit new members. They seemed interested, and we were once again excited to move forward. However, our new recruits’ enthusiasm was short-lived. They soon expressed an inability to continue with the group due to their other extra-curricular activities.
We determined to move forward again. So, we achieved two events in our group. The first of these was a zine workshop put on by WriteGirl. This was an excellent event that brought students together to express their creativity and thoughts. We were please with the results as it created a positive vibe and validated people’s differences. The second event we accomplished was putting together a showcase in one of our school’s hallways. The idea behind this showcase was to promote positive self esteem. Inside the showcase, we posted in giant letters the message, “YOU ARE ENOUGH.” Around this message, we posted polaroid photos of diverse students on our campus along with a positive message that each wanted to share with our school community. We take pride in the work we did complete. We only wish that we could have done more, more to effect positive change in our school, more to take pride in.
We acknowledge that this project was placed on a back burner for too long and that we should have made it more of a priority. As a result, we did not accomplish our goals.
Final budget
How did you end up using your funds?
Because we received the money in the form of a grant check, the money was sent to LAUSD to be processed and has still not processed it to this day. We do not have access to the funds.
